What to ExpectPrior to actually booking your first appointment, you are invited to call should you wish to seek further information. Once you have made an appointment, you may wish to compile a list of important dates that have affected you and those close* to you, i.e., birth dates, death dates, marriages, divorces, illnesses (mental and physical), moves, major accidents, career changes - anything that has had a significant impact on you and those close to you over your lifetime. This information can be included with the questionnaire that is described below. Family information and important dates are used to create a family map of typically three generations, also referred to as a genogram, which can be helpful to both the client and the therapist. A copy will be given to you if you so desire.
Appointment times are available afternoon and evenings, typically Tuesday to Saturday, at a central location. You will be given a full hour for your session, and payment is by cash, cheque, or e-transfer only. Toward the end of the first session, you will be asked if you believe the client/therapist connection fits for you and whether you would like to follow up with another appointment. Goals for therapy will be established and the approximate number of sessions negotiated. At that time, you will be asked to complete a questionnaire at home, which provides some additional information that will be helpful in the therapy process. Providing essential information through the completion of paperwork at home allows you more time to focus on what brought you to the session in the first place and is a more economical use of your therapy time. The questionnaire may also be completed and brought to the first session if you so desire. If there is a need to cancel or change an appointment, please give 24 hours notice to avoid incurring charges. *family of origin - meaning the family you grew up in. *family of creation - meaning the people who form your family in adult life (you may include your pets). *significant relationships |
